Teak Interior Refinishing

I am planning on touching up the interior teak on my 1983 H31 in the spring using Daly's Teak Oil. Does anyone know if Hunter put a finish such as varnish over the interior teak or did they just use pure teak oil? If they just used teak oil, then some new oil along with wet sanding should brighten up the interior? Comments welcome! Thanks, Greg W.

Refinishing Interior Teak

Certainly a new application of teak oil will help brighten everything up..... but this will not last too long. Only 6-12 months at best. My understanding is that Hunter used only Dalys Seafin teak oil on the interior teak. However I have talked directly to Dalys and they said that, after a light sanding, I could also apply their Profin gloss finish (which Hunter used on the teak and holly cabin floor) straight over this teak oil. I have now done this with good success, but only on some of the teak trims. This gives a pleasant and lasting sheen. I am reluctant to do this on the larger teak areas as the result would likely be too glossy. However Profin matt finish might be the solution to this potential problem.

Sunny spot?

I heard about Daly's Seafin also from someone who does teak for a living. But I want to add these questions: In one large area, I have fading from the sun, on the wall next to the companionway stairs. Is there a correction for that and/or is there a UV additive you can add to the finish or one that comes with that type of ingredient?

i use dalys

About once a season when i am out on the hook and tired of reading, i take a small piece of sponge lightly impregnated with daly's and go over all of the teak in the boat interior(2000 340). i usually do it more often around steps and galley trim, especially around counter and fridge where alot of use goes on and water is prevalent fom drinks, ice ,food prep etc. It gives a beautiful spruce up, protects and has that new boat faint aroma( some say this aroma is an apraphrodisiac). Great product great result not a hard task light amount is the ticket otherwise have a piece of old towel to wipe any xs off t

Straight From Hunter

I received the following response today from Hunter Marine: "The only thing we used on the furniture was the Daly's Seafin Teak Oil, we did not use any type of varnish." I am not sure about the sole or holly, but from looking at the slight sheen it has, likely it has the finish you mentioned! Greg W.

Sole

Am currently redoing the sole in my 1979 37 cutter. There was some type of varnish that had turned dark brown over the years (and a bleach spill didn't help matters.) Stripped it using a low-toxic, citrus stripper I got at the local big box home improvement store. (I didn't want to be living with toxic chemicals.) It took 2 applications (3 in some spots) to get the old finish off, but it seems to have worked OK. I am putting Ultimate Sole on. This is a high-gloss but still non-slippery urethane finish developed just for soles. So far so good. I started in the quarter-berth as a small section to see how it went on, and it seems to live up to the reviews. Not slippery even when wet.

Interior wood

This I just hit either with lemon oil on a regular basis or Liquid Gold furniture polish. Either does a pretty good job of bringing the wood back. Do a small section at a time, and it doesn't take long to get the whole boat done a bit at a time. Liquid Gold was recommended by the Cape Dory users group for non-varnished interior teak.

teak oil

Greg; I bought my 1984 H31 new and the interior came unfinished so that the owner could finish the teak as he saw fir. I used 300 grit sand paper and finely sanded the teak prior to using Maquires teak oil. I put on three coats of oil, wiping between coats. I wet sanded, using 400 grit sandpaper and teak oil, for the last coat. Every 3 to 4 years I have used lemon oil for a touch up. The teak still looks great. Mac.
