Teak Interior Refinishing

I have read many past postings about interior teak refinishing, but still have a few questions? Did the factory in 1983 just oil the interior of the H31's or is there a varnish coat of some sort which was applied. I have also read that I should use Seafin Teak Oil from Daly's. Is this correct? Is this rubbed in with a cloth, brushed on or applied by hand(ouch)? What if one has some scratches like where the TV sits or on the top of the chart table. Can these be lightly sanded by hand or with the use of a palm sander and will the color come back ok without having to resand everything? Thanks, Greg

Seafin Oil

Greg: Seafin is the ticket. As you apply multiple coats it builds up and will fill scratches. A light sanding is a good idea. I would suggest that you try cleaning all the surfaces prior to sanding to minimize the risk of sanding through the veneer.

Steve,

...what have you found that works to clean the teak before you re-oil it? I have found that in high-use areas such as companionway handles/steps, etc., the soiled surface tends to resist most cleaners.

Can't enough good about Rebecca Wittman's books (Brighworks and Brightworks Companion).... It gives you - or tries to - the sense of how to approach the whole Brightworks issue... tools, supplies, sources, choices.... the recomendations here are a start... might do some serious reading before really digging in... --jerry

Doug: If you are trying to clean wood, Murphy's Oil is a good choice. It does get the dirt out of the wood, and also usually doesn't do the finish any good. I would not consider it if I am trying to clean wood that is not going to be refinished. The idea is to minize the sanding. Areas like the treads on the step are solid wood, so they are not an issue. The problem is with the veneer's.
