Well, it is about time to replace my cabin sole, and I was planning to use teak & holly veneer plywood. I do have one supplier in mind, but am having a hard time finding others to compare price. I have been assured by other boat owners that the veneer will hold up ok if sealed properly top and bottom. Because of the expense of having it done, I am trying to keep this as a do-it yourself project. Any comments or suggestions from those of you who have been through a project like this would be helpful.

Plywood veneer works excellent

I used 3/4 teak and holly veneer to do mine. Rip you old floor out and use that as the template. Varnish with 3 to 4 coats before you put the new floor back in. Some epoxy the underside, I did not. It is a very rewarding project when you are finished.

Here's competition

Riverside Lumber in New Orleans sells teak & holly plywood. When I was rebuilding the cabin sole in an Irwin 31, I purchased 1/4" from Riverside and then epoxyed it to 1/2" marine grade plywood. after cutting it to size, I painted the sides and underside to prevent moisture absorption with marine single part urethane. I then applied several coats of marine grade varnish to the top side. Just yesterday I looked at a new cabin sole in a Catalina 36. This guy used some type of bamboo flooring and glued strips of some darker wood strips to it. Then he applied a high gloss finish. Honestly, it looks cheap and plastic. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's hard to beat teak and holly if it is done right. I've attached Riverside's web address for your convenience. Good luck! Let us know how the job turns out. Dick

I am very partial to solid wood. It is not much

trouble to make up a panel of walnut or cherry or mahogany, edge glued and finish sanded with a belt sander. In your neck of the woods you could also get old growth cypress. If you make it in three pieces and fasten it with screws then you can remove a section for cleaning and inspection.

Teak sole

Actually, I have 24 sections. All but 3 are loose fit. I will need 4-5 sheets of 4x8 to make the sections from. Most are stright cuts, but some have rounded edges that will require some router work. There are three hatches that lift out to inspect/work in the bilge. Some of thes are routed for the cover to sit flush.

Very practical solution!

Kerry: There are other solutions that may be more practical. They sell this stuff under many different names. If you have a solid floor, then this could serve you well. This stuff is being used in many of the newer vessels.

Big BOAT!! Do you hold dances in there

on Saturday night? ;D In your case plywood may be a better choice. My cabin sole is about 3 feet by about 8 feet maximum length and width. Nothing is straight.

Bad plywood

My boards are in bad condition. This is what is prompting me to replace.

marine ply & then these floorings too.

Kerry: You can also use your existing floor as a pattern and then apply one of these systems over the plywood. If you make a mistake with the plywood, it does not cost you an arm/leg.

After you get everything cut and fitted

seal all the surfaces and edges with epoxy. Then varnish the epoxy. Teak and holly is traditional but there is an enormous selection of veneers available chose what will please you for the cost that you have to invest.

Look at alternatives

I replaced the laminated teak sole in my Santana 30 with a product called Lonwood, obtainable from Defender. It did a great job, had the appearance of real wood and was far simpler to install than the original sole which I also installed many years ago. Not cheap, but very nice.

Plas Teak...

On my Pearson 323 replaced the old sole with new Antigo Plas Teak & Holly Sole. Had Travis from T&T Custom Marine in Raleigh Durham NC do it. Would never use wood again. Cut with lazer fit perfect to the original. Looks beautiful and never a minute of upkeep. Plus cheaper. Roger

Is this the sheeting type? If sheeting. or strips, it still goes on the base floor which I have to replace about half of my panels. There is another called Amtico that come in strip like boards that looks interesting, but in the end, it will cost more than 1/2" teak & holly plywood. My unknown with the plywood is the cost of the resin or coating for the bottom and edges, and the cost of coating the top. Not sure how much material, or which materials best for the coating. Was thinking Poly-Urathane for the top, and something like West System for the bottom and edges.

Absolutely unreal! I wish I was half as talented as you. Now that I've looked at your job, I have this bad feeling I might be disappointed after completing mine.
