I would like to replace the teak hand rails on my 1979 Hunter 25. Any suggestions on where to find the right replacement part?

Couple of thoughts...

You could do-it-yourself (go to http://www.practical-sailor.com/tools/features.html) and look for the article on building custom teak rails. The nice thing would be that you could customize it very easily to your specific boat. The other option is to buy - Defender has a lot of options (http://www.defender.com/cgi-bin/Web_store/web_store.cgi?keywords=teak&frames=yes&store=yes) Good luck! Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer

Plasteak

Wayne, Here is a link for some stuff. I have never used it but you will never have to varnish again.

Restoration or elimination?

If you are restoring the boat then you probably are only interested in teak. But if you want to eliminate the varnish work then consider Jonathan's idea. The Related Link is a picture of my handrail project, four rails totalling almost 35 feet. This is PlasTeak but I made them myself from their 1x3 "lumber", two pieces twelve foot long and two over five feet. It is very easy to work using normal woodworking tools. You need a drillpress to get straight holes, especially if you want them to match the old ones(also true for real teak). There is also a darker color of teak, more like my original rails.

Stainless Handrails

A PO of our '77 h27 replaced the teak with a shorter stainless handrail that runs from aft of the shrouds (the shrouds are better than the handrail when moving inside them) aft about 30 inches. This makes the front half of the cabin roof ideal for relaxed seating underway, and the maintenance is nothing. Of course, it changes the look of our classic design. But the result is to de-emphasize the high cabin roof. Not a bad thing. Anyway, we are doing well with this mod. Of course, you will have to fill and paint the holes where you remove the teak handle. Thought you might like an alternative! David Lady Lillie
