Last year we installed new teak slides for the companionway hatch cover. We used Teak Guard on them. They looked great most of the summer and the Teak Guard was so easy to use and clean up. By fall, the slides had black in the grooves of the grain. The black could be the usual stuff or accumulated soot from the carferry which blows over the marina twice a day. If you are a Teak Guard user, do you clean your teak with a mild cleaner and recoat each year? Or do you remove the Teak Guard with teak cleaner before recoating?

Teak Guard

I just clean it with water to remove the dirt. Something mild would be ok as well. I put a lot of coats on. Most people that use Teak Guard do this as well. I put this on two seasons ago, and it looks great. Do not use the cleaner unless you are going to strip off the old finish. You should not have to do this if you keep a good coat of the product on. I put some on in the middle of the year, and then at the end as well. Great stuff, would not use anything else. Dale

Annual process

Every Spring I clean the teak by scrubbing with soap and water or if it's really dirty I use an oxcylic acid cleaner. Once done I allow it to fully dry, then reapply 2 to 3 coats depending on the area. High wear areas get more. That usually does it for the season. I'll scrub it with boat soap when washing the boat if it starts to show dirt.

Because it's easy

Putting it on 2x a season is a no brainer, it's just so easy to do. That and IMHO the rich golden color looks a whole lot better than weathered teak. Each to his own.

Oxcylic acid

The Teak Guard will gradually fade, but takes all season to do so, so by the time you need to clean it there's little left of it. The oxcylic acid will remove most of what is left along with any dirt. Some years I don't bother with the Ox acid and just scrub it with soap and water. Once it's dry I decide if it's clean enough to apply the Teak Guard.

Anyone using Teak Guard on teak DECKS

If so what is the WET traction of Teak Guard versus bare teak? Ive been using similar compounds with good results .... only because they allow the deck to 'wet-out' and still yield the same wet-traction while keeping the 'grey' away. Any 'slippery when wet' would be a major disqualification.
