Hi folks, getting ready to replace the companionway doors. Would like to keep the original look which was teak veneer over some other wood. (I want the teak look.) So...what kind of wood would you use and where would you purchase it. Mine has the three slats that fit into the grooves! Thanks in advance! Jack

Teak Plywood

Last year, I took my old companionway boards to Rudy and he measured them and made me up some new pen boards right on the spot. He has sheets of 4X8' 1/2" Teak plywood at his store. The only thing you need to do is seal the end grain with varnish or Cetol. He wanted to check the measurement of the 222 pen board, but I think that he already has the patterns for most of the O'Day boats. I just used Teak oil on mine the other day. Also, sometimes you can buy Teak at a reasonable price at marine consignment stores. They sometime carry some used stuff. Joe

Another Option...

is to buy the board and make them yourself. Rudy will sell you the teak plywood and ship it to you or you can talk to your local lumberyard and they can order it for you. Either way it's not cheap. I hava a local yard that caters to woodworkers that stocks it on sight, I'm sure if you do some looking around you can find some at a reasonable price. Good Luck, Bill

Pen boards

Jack, Bill is right. If you can get the plywood, you could build it yourself. The plywood looks good, but I'm not too keen on using it because the edge of the plywood sometimes gets banged up and splinters, and the end grain needs to be sealed or it can warp. A good cabinet maker can also build these pen boards out of any type of wood that you desire. He can add louvers or screen and make it up fancy. One of my friends has replaced most of his wood with Star-board on his Seaward 22. He told me that he hates wood because of the maintenance of it. I'm seriously thinking of building some new heavy duty pen boards for my boat. I've already added two Mahogany boards inside of my companionway hatch. My new pen board can fit against these two boards and give better security than the plywood pen boards that I have now. Joe

Local yard?

Bill, I'm in West Warwick and wondering what lumber yard you use as this is my year to replace the wood work on my O'day 25. Thanks, Greg
