Teak discoloration

Hello,

About 2 years ago, I used Cetol Natural Teak + Cetol gloss on my cockpit coamings. Unfortunately it rained not long after the application, and the finish on the top edge of the coamings only dried milky. I lived with it for 2 years, but sanded it off this year to start over on the top edge. When doing so, I noticed that I am not able to get down to fresh golden teak -- after sanding, the top edge has a dark grey hue that I cannot sand off. I am wondering if it is moisture -- last weekend I used teak brightener on the top edge after sanding and am going to give it a week to dry before I re-assess. Anyone else experienced this?

Dark is usually mold/mildew easily removed with the brightener. Lots of generic substitutes are available.

I am surprised that you were unable to sand off the discoloration! I just refinished a hatch that was in bad condition some spots of mold/mildew but was able to sand it off. I to used Cetol Natural Teak and Gloss. It lasted 5 years. This time around I am going with Spar Varnish. Hope I made the right choice.
