My boat has teak plank decking on the cockpit sole and seats. The caulking between the individual boards, and caulking around the edges of the area are failing in spots. What's the best (easiest) way to remove

The caulk is available at http://www.teakdecking.com/index.html .... be sure to add an 'isolation strip' of 3M 'fineline' tape in the bottom of the groove, so that the caulk doesnt adhere in the bottom of the groove. Best way to remove the caulk - for a small job - is to simply heat bend the thin end of a 10" mill bastard file then 'sharpen it'. The bent file is used to 'hook-out' the old caulk. For large jobs, the best is the Fein Multimaster tool with a 'teak' blade. Other caulk removal methods can be found at http://www.yandina.com/TeakDeck.htm

The easiest way to remove the caulking from the seams is with a Hot Knife. Hot Knives come in a variety of head & blade sizes, depending on the width of your seam. The heads are interchangable. The knives are available in 110V or 220V. The head and blade heat and actually cut through the caulking like soft butter. Teak Decks look nice but SUCK
I just covered mine with truck spray on bed liner paint. Great non skid, no leaks and they now make it on most colors. Ain't wuite as pretty but I spend more time boating and less time chasing leaks
