A teak deck on a fiberglass boat looks classy when it is new and is supposed to provide a very good non-skid surface. What type of maintenance is required for the teck deck? Does the teak deck wear down over time requiring resurfacing? Does it stain from bird droppings, fish carcasses, and spilled beverages/food. Does it beach out?

I can't imagine having a teak deak. IT WILL BE A LOT OF WORK! Are you mad... or have lots of time/money on your hands? Wish I had a teak deck, retired, loads of money, maintenance crew. Rich

It's A Nightmare
It needs to be bleached and scrubbed. It will stain easily. It had good non-skid. Adds a lot of weight. It often leaks unless just glued down. You are so right; it is really pretty. Most folks with them eventually remove them, from what I have seen over the years. RD

Get one
I will definitly get one when I have a lot of money and hire flock of crews to look after it for me. That will have to wait until the lottery ship come in. ;-)

humm let me think this out,
100 separate pieces of wood sealed together with some goo, hmmm then about 300 screws into my deck, hmmm, 300 more potential ways to get water in the laminate. hummm. scrub it regularly, treat it or coat it. sand it. Hmmm. No I would not be intested in doing that to a perfectly good fiberglass boat.

I Hate Teak Above Deck
I mentioned this in another thread. It is hot in the summer. Far more work than it's worth. But you are right it looks good new. My boat has no teak above deck! I'd rather sail then stone a deck. I wouldnt even buy one if I win the lotery. Stay with plastic, it's cooler and cleans up easily. Oh to answer your question Yes to all. It wares over time, must be stoned to keep it fresh, you must scrub against the grain to keep the "grooves" from forming in the softer sections of the wood. It stains, and yes it must be resurfaced if you want to keep that new look.

Nothing gives better wet traction than a teak deck ....
Modern teak deck construction using epoxy bonding instead of screws removes 99% of the mechanical maintenance problems. Modern teak coatings (Semco, Teak Wonder, etc.) are easy and quick to apply and allow the teak to look good/new for years. Too bad the BEST teak deck coating/preservative (the same active ingredient in 'Scotchguard') has been withdrawn from the marketplace by the manufacturer -3M. Wood is an insulation material and has a much higher R value than solid fiberglass ... leaving the interior spaces under a teak deck cooler than bare fiberglass. Modern single part oxime-cure rubber caulking lasts as long as the base teak. My 20 year old decks look almost the same as the day they were laid down .... I use a yearly coating of a mix of: 1/3 Olympic clear / 1/3 Semco Natural / 1/3 teak wonder .... takes about 2 hours to apply ..... the same time it takes to scrub or apply non-skid wax on a glass deck. The only downside I can realize with a teak deck ... A full teak deck does add weight to a boat. It also seems to me that those that DONT have them are the ones who bitch the loudest against teak decks; and also, really have NO idea of the true benefits - traction when the deck is wet/flooded ---- safety! For my tastes, a boat that doesnt have exterior wood is simply a ........ chlorox bottle. As long as I can afford it I will have a teak overlay deck, its just plainly ....... safer. I dont worry about 'class envy'; I just want a good looking and 'safe when wet' decks and nothing can come even close to the 'performance' of teak decks.

Maintaining teak decks
I use a mixture of powdered spic and span/bleach/hot water. Spray a section of deck, use a brush to work the solution in and rinse. The deck will be a silvery gray when done . Once a per season is plenty. Keep the bungs (plugs) in good shape - the screws do have a tendency to work themselves out so you need to keep on top of that. I don't find teak decks all that much work and left unvarnished or unoiled they provide the best traction, wet or dry, that you can find.

MARINEDECK is a light weight syntetic flooring(ACMEC)resists exposure elements,excellent UV-resistant,wear resistance and nearly maintenance free,less expensive than wooden deck ,but you have to provide a deck plan,for the factory to cut it at your specs.Also I really liked this one,it's a cork covered with some kind of hard resin,Etap is putting this on their new 46'.
