I have heard that someone is now producing a teak colored Starboard material. I have spent most of this afternoon searching for any info, but to no avail. Anybody know anything about this and if so has anyone used it to make replacement hand rails for the coachroof? Thanks,

The company will send you samples if you request some. Do yourself a favor and look at samples before you commit to the product. Call me a traditionalist but it did not look anything like teak to me and I would not have it on my boat. That said, others have said they liked it.

different companies that make this type of product, PlasTeak (plasteak.com) and Tek-Dek (tek-dek-international.com). I got samples from both companies as I am looking for alternatives for my soon new deck on my P36-2. My opinion is that the Tek-Dek looks much better....non glossy with more of a wood grain look. The stuff is said to be great as a non skid. My only reservation is that I have not seen an actual example of the product on a boat and was wondering how it would be laid on a deck as it does not laterally bend as wood will. I would love to see a boat deck done with this though. Greg

Not realy sure how well starboard or plasteak or similar would realy hold up in handrail use, I've seen some strong plastics, but most of the fake woods feel like recycled milk jugs, and what I've seen of that it tends to sag and flex at work a while ago, we had some rails shipped in by accident, they were supposed to be handicap rail for bathrooms, and what we got looked like coachroof handrail, shipping papers listed them as $28. for the shorter ones and $37 for the longer one. posted some pictures, but lost the sheet with the manufacturer supplier info on it. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/merc2dogs/my_photos should get you there if you want to look at them. Looks like pressure formed oatmeal
I was interested in no maintenance also. But, It looks lousy. Metal hand rails would look better.

I agree that the plastic rails look like plastic, but I can only use the boat a couple of times a month and I want to enjoy sailing, not woodworking, so there may have to be a compromise.
