I am planning on replacing the cover/top of the engine housing on my 1984 34" Hunter, with a piece of teak and holly that is approximately 17" X 26". Does anyone know a source for a piece this size? I know that I can buy a 4' x 8' sheet, but I don't need all that material. I could also put a veneer over a plywood piece, and would be interested in knowing a source for that. I've checked Google, but haven't found a good source, as of yet. Thanks

For a small piece of Teak/Holly, check out ebay. See smaller pieces on there fairly often.

I have a teak toe/rub rail on my 27' Tartan

that is a maintenance PITA. It always seems to get damaged no matter how careful we are. For this reason I like to keep a few pieces of teak around. As for any board lumber 17" wide you are probably out of luck as it is not usually available in that width. But if you had 2 pieces say 9" x 26" (like 5 board foot or so) that had clean milled edges you could join the pieces together with a biscuit joiner, clamps and a support or two. For that matter you could join 3 or more nicely milled pieces (like they sell at WM). A lumber yard that carries teak or holly is not going to want to sell you exactly 5 board foot piece but should have something close in a viable width for your project. The teak lumber I have recently bought was nearly 1" thick which I think would be more optimal for your project than some of the 1/2" thick pieces WM sells. I do not mind having some teak lumber left over after a project as I know I will need it someday soon. Veneer is great for fine furniture that sits in your living room. I am not sure I want it on my boat any more than I already have. It can also be a challenge to apply with good looking results. Find a friend with a biscuit joiner tool, get some long clamps, glue the boards together and augment with some cross braces on the underside. Good luck.
