What tricks did those of you use to remove black spots from the wood (primarily the holly) after the old finish has been removed and you're back down to bare wood?

Oxalic acid was the first thing that came to my mind. Yes, the holly part of my interior sole also had black stains. (But not so much on the teak part as you have observed.) The acid definitely helped. All gone before I put on the finish coat ... which was water based clear flooring product. Then the black came back somewhat. Here is a url with better tips. It pertains to oak, which is really prone to black spotting. For my cabin sole refinish, seems that I probably didn't repeat the oxalic acid enough times. Or I should have used a petroleum based type of finishing product.

some times it may be too deep to get it all out with out cutting the teak to thin by sanding (block sanding that is) ..... but the oxcilic acid is a good way to start...or you can get some clean strip bleach kit at the big box store and try that as well ...the black spots are some times from mold and meldew....very tough to get out.....

STU you may also want to spot try muratic acid because it may be tanic acid stain...remembered this while reading another thread......gotta have my mind checked got to where i cant member crap....
