PTC Emily appeared, went to 45 mph winds for, let me calculate...

High Pressures currently over SW USA will push PTC Emily out into the Atlantic as it dumps cooling rains on Florida, reducing sea temperatures in its track.

Dang we had one of those here on the Gulf Coast about 3 weeks back that lasted 5 hours and didn't get a Name.

There is some activity off West Africa but there is little concern at the moment.

I got a call from Spain from a friend of ours asking about storm Emily. His phone gave him an alert about storm weather in Tampa. I responded with a text message, " it seems to be a rain event with some minor localized flooding, hardly any wind; have not checked on the boats but do not anticipate any problems" That was my "boat shoes on the ground" live forecast. The answer to the question why it became a named storm so quick is because of CTA. These are heavily populated areas and it allows them to broadcast more serious warnings so that they can cover their a___s. Not too long ago a storm ripped in the middle of the night with no warning and caused some heavy damage. The "No Name" storm caused the weather forecasters to catch a lot of flack.

PTC Emily update and current Atlantic and I do a quick glance each day using this example for Aug 3

A few easy indications that I use for long term movements and potential Intensity[ACE]

1) Small blue arrow showing the High Pressure Fronts. {General movement ESE]
2) Path of PTC Emily with the Satellite overlay. The Low under the P in PTC Emily is the center.
3) The PTC Emily flows(pushed) in the trough between the Two Highs.
4) The light blue arrow shows the normal West African birth place and historical paths and that path would be over Cooler than normal waters indicated by the blue Oval.
5) The Orange Arrow is where we are getting the West African potentials, this season. The waters down there are slightly warmer than normal. So far, not tropical waves but just plain old storms.

Good News...
Nothing for next 10 days from Africa.

Thank you for the update and weather lesson. Sailors need such information if they plan on sailing for more than a day or two in open waters. The graphics sure help to paint the picture. When the two Highs close on each other does that influence the winds in the low? Speed up or tear apart and disperse?

Speed up or tear apart and disperse?

YES to both!

The "Speed Up" is what you might imagine if it were Water Waves, The higher the wave height (pressure) and the Closer the Waves the faster you would "surf" between them. The "tear apart" would happen by restriction (pinching) of the Counter clockwise tropical motion, thus minimizing spreading wider and intensifying.

Thanks. Ive been reading about compression zones in the areas around the north side of New Zealand. How the weather patterns are influenced. Your image showed that structure. Suspect the storm formations off of the African coast get influenced in the same way and pushed West towards the waters of the mid southern Atlantic.

Think of swirls and eddies in water. As the spinning of the Earth pushes the winds near the equator to the West, the North and South Hemispheres winds [ ESE ] spins and swirls to fill in behind the equatorial winds heading west.
Thus we get counters clockwise Eddies in the Northern and Clockwise spins in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are many more "spin effects" and in addition the Pacific and Gulf Streams water flows. Add to this the Jet Stream and modern computer based models are Born.

PS: Engineers study these type flow patterns and eddies in Thermodynamics and Hydrodynamics for mixing fluids and making stuff in tanks.

Next time your are motor cruising in calm water, look astern at the swirls and eddies.

Your boat is the "earth spin" as the bow makes a Hole in the water or West wind Flow at the equator.
As the "winds push forward", the water must fill the hole in the water left by the boat.
So...

As the water flows to fill the boat's hole, they flow the opposite direction of the boat and Swirls and spins.
Also note the Port side eddies spin in the opposite direction from the Starboard side.

Water is a liquid and air is a gas but...
Both are fluids and act in the same dynamic ways.

Great example. I grew up vacationing in Colorado and loved the dry fly dropping right where the Rainbow trout waited as the swirl pushed that fly into his still water vision.
Then my Grandma cooking on a wood stove, the fresh trout (with trout gravy), hash browns, soft scrambled eggs, and the lightest biscuits known to man at the +8000 foot mountain cabin.
