In California, we have a 8+/- % sales tax depending in which county you live. Then you get hit with an annual property tax (like a home) in addition to other registration fees. How does this differ in your state? I very interested in hearing from Floridians, since we also own property there. thanks, abe

Annual registration. IIRC its $25. Sales tax is around 7% +/-. We don't got no stinkin' state personal property tax. Hunter 25.5

Approx. 8% sales tax, then a yearly 1/2% of value at the yearly registration. About $450 for our C310. The recent news is that we are allowed to deduct our state sales tax from our federal tax starting this year. Too bad it's not retroactive!

Jon, what really rankles me is the boat...

tab fee, which is very high, all goes into the general fund. None is earmarked for waterway improvements, instead it goes for roadway repairs, bridge repairs, etc. Terry

Not Sales Tax on new/used boat sales. Also includes any boat-related equipment/options/toys bought at the same time. This was done 10 years ago to stimulate the once-lucrative boating industry in the state. Likewise, there is no ongoing personal property tax in the state, Buy it there and store it there and you can reap the benefit. But we do have to register the boat there, even if it is documented which, depending on size, must be paid.

We pay 6% sales tax on the purchase then an annual registration. My 30' Lancer is about $130/year.

check this!

There is no sales tax on a used boat and the registration is free, however it cost me over 100.00 sales tax and registration for the trailer. (Oday 25)

Hunter 356 Cobb Island, MD
Virginia has

Taxes 2% on purchase of boat plus depending on county around 4% of property value every year. So on the first year I owned the H356 the cost would have been $2800 on purchase and $5600 property tax. Thats why I keep my boat in Maryland, only had to pay a 5% tax on net purchase plus $25 for registration every two years. Jim S/V Java

Texas Taxes

In Texas, you will pay 6.5% at time of purchase, then a small registration fee annually. About a $100.00 for our Beneteau 321. There was no registration for documented boats until 2004. Many folks were finding creative ways to circumvent the sales tax, so the state uses the mandatory registration as a way to collect tax on documented vessels, especially from private sales.

New Hampshire does have an annual registration fee that is based in part on the value of the boat. In MA, you pay sales tax, and a registration fee every other year that amounts to about $35/year. Before last year, it was only $15/year. Boston City also charges Excise tax -- about $100 for my 26 footer -- and also, this year started a new slip/mooring fee charged by the foot that costs me another $100 total. Two things you can't escape: death and taxes. Fair winds, Tom

Texas tax part 2

Addendum to the Texas tax: Our boat was purchased in Canada and registered to an offshore company in the UK (no sales tax paid initially). We did this since we were cruising anyway outside of North America. Upon return to Texas, registration did not involve paying any sales tax since the purchase was more than four years ago. Go figure...

Texas Tax Part 3

When we bought our O'Day 25, and brought it to TX (purchased in Alakska), we had to pay sales tax. I knew that was coming, so I wasn't surprised. When we bought our Coronado 35 in Louisiana (not bringing to TX any time soon), I had finally decided that my final "discount" offer would be for the seller to pay the required sales tax, thinking this would save me several hundred dollars. He responded that Louisiana doesn't charge sales tax on used boats, the registration fee was about $16 a year. So, I got what I wanted, without him actually having to give it to me. Sweet deal, when you're not expecting it.
