Southerly 42RST FL
Any thoughts? …… We have a new Southerly 42 with a 4JH5E Yanmar engine and MaxProp. We experienced the following ‘series of unfortunate events’.
- The first event occurred while backing out of a rafting situation. The backing process was proceeding in an orderly fashion when I shifted into forward to slow the boat, but instead received more reverse acceleration. After four more attempts I finally achieved forward.
- The second event occurred the same day after sailing a regatta. I was approaching a mooring pontoon in forward gear under good control and shifted into reverse to slow the boat, but reverse did not engage. I proceeded in forward gear, re-circling the pontoon and landing safely. I did not use reverse for this second attempt. A marine mechanic on site inspected the gear box and linkage at this time, but could find no problems. He did identify that neutral was not in the ‘normal’ perpendicular position, but slightly forward of perpendicular.
- The third event occurred four days later (after successfully docking in two different ports). This day we had been sailing in a 20 knot breeze for 4+ hours before coming into port and attempting to dock in wind and tidal currents. Again, while proceeding with docking maneuvers the reverse did not engage. Not five minutes after we drifted into the dock a marine mechanic came to help us. He immediately identified that we had no reverse and made mechanical adjustments to the linkage cable at the level of the gear box which restored our ability to shift into reverse.
You will no doubt agree that intermittent problems are hard to diagnose. Are there any mechanics out there who have input or anyone who has had a similar problem?

Too many "sailors" rely too much on reverse to control boat speed. Take it slow and things wont go too badly wrong when the enviable happens.

Taurus, if your gear box is like mine, beta, and I think yanmar is, if the first mech mentioned the neutral position was a little forward, sounds like the cable needed adjustment to sync the positions. If it was too far forward the cable throw was probably not enough to engage reverse all the way. Sounds like this was it if the second mech got it working. Is your boat same as "Distant Shores", sweet boat .... Red

Transmission cable adjustment is not right. Since this is a new boat talk to your dealer about their commissioning procedure (or lack of).

If it is a Volvo Penta (teleflex) linkage that includes throttle control, there is a bit of learned skill to develop confidence in the operation.

Whether a new boat or not, reverse is kinda more than just an unnecessary evil that you should avoid!:)

But whether new or old boat, I would recommend investigating what's going on YOURSELF, rather than "depending" on your dealer to "fix it." Spend the time, with the dealer and his "mechanics" to find out and physically look at the linkage and how the transmission is connected to the cable at the back of the engine. Try shifting the transmission by hand at the engine, as well as through the cockpit lever. Most engine/boat/transmission manuals describe how the connections should be made and what the neutral, forward and reverse positions should be. Some gear cable connections require additional plates to be installed on the engine to hold the cable in the right orientation to the transmission lever itself. Take pictures and compare what's there with what should be there.

I also suggest once "things are fixed" that before you try docking again, knowing that you may, just may, have some not unrealistic trepidations about doing so, that you do some maneuvering away from dock out in open water. That should build your confidence.

I have a fixed blade prop and don 't know squat about a MaxProp, but could it be one where you NEED to have the boat in neutral for a short period of time before changing gears? I don't know, perhaps others do.

Good luck, congratulations on your new boat.

I have a Maxi-Prop and I am suspecting a problem with your prop. I have excellent response when shifting into reverse and, since the blades reset immediatly, reverse braking is quite effective. When was the last time your prop was lubed? Perhaps lack of lubrication is slowing the abiltiy of the blades to reset when you hit reverse. One thing you need to do is to determine for sure that your trans is shifting properly. Once you establish that, then you can center in on the prop. If you can get on the hard you can evaluate how smoothly your prop blades are moving. I think it is reccomended that the prop is greased every two years.

welcome to SBO

Sweet boat. I think Gunni was spot on but others here will provide additional insight to that type of problem. Meanwhile i went to see what a Southerly 42RST looked like and saw a picture of one parked on a beach:eek: can you do that? without hurting the prop that is.
btw I'm in favor of making best use of every part a boat has.

It is a beautiful boat and sails like a dream. Sure wish we could find a solution to this problem.

OOps - yes you can park it on a beach and wait for the tide to take you out again w/o any impact on the prop.

I am not familiar with your prop or shifting system but here is something to possibly keep in mind. I assume that you have a one leaver shift/throttle control.

In neutral it is normally possible to disconnect the shift function and operate the throttle only. If there is something mechanically wrong in the shift control it may be possible that the shift control function is being disconnected. This could explain your issue in forward and reverse.

Good luck with this.

A new boat? Doesn't the builder or dealer have a customer service department. Is there a warranty?
