Tappan Microwave Replacement Option

After 12.5 years, our microwave quit. After hiring an electrician to check the wiring, breakers, etc. then a repair service, we were told it's shot and to replace. Easier said than done. Our H44DS pre-cut/finished opening can only accommodate a 9.6"H. The smallest height we can find is 10.2". Wondering if anyone has found a suitable replacement, Tappan is no longer in the microwave business. Hunter Parts responded with the product Hunter is now using and it is also 10.2". I'm sure we can re-do the opening but sure would like an easier alternative. Any help is appreciated.

Look at the RV industry for a possible replacement.
I found this link.\
http://www.rempros.com/dimensions/microwave_sizes.html

What is a size of smallest microwave

Typically all microwaves which are less than 18 inches wide and 10 inches high refer as compact sizes. 17”W x 13”D x 10”H one of the smallest size of countertop microwave.

Is that the inside the cabinet or it is the hole with trim on the out side. The smallest I have found is .7 cubic ft. These are 10.5 average. This includes feet and a bump out on the bottom seen in the image. No idea if it will fit but guessing not.

Maybe it is time for a Sawsall, or locating the microwave in a more forgiving space and turning the old cabinet into a spice rack or wine glass/bottle holder.

Wish we had another spot but Hunter does a great job of utilizing every inch of space. Great suggestion, though.

The two we purchased did not have removable feet....or at least the rear feet were metal and part of the frame. The front two could be pried off it appeared but it didn't solve the height issue overall. There is also a top edge which adds more height.

Does it need a new magnetron? That may give it a new life. Typically they are not brand specific.

We tried to have it repaired and after an hour of searching for parts (Tappan, OEM) the tech said it was useless....parts were no longer available. He suspected the board or some kind of internal fuse.

Has anyone tried to sand down the metal back feet? We were worried about damaging the new unit. But, without the feet the height measurement came within a fraction of fitting. Then we could slightly sand the wooden base it sits on in the cabinet and perhaps have our replacement.

Good suggestions on the face frame. If it hangs down, perhaps you can remove that, slide the microwave in, then re-attach?

Yes, the face frame removes easily, but then there is a wooden base frame which is glued so tightly to the counter top that we couldn't budge it. The microwave sits on it. There are grooves for the feet, I'm assuming to keep the microwave from shifting and sliding while under sail. Unless we damaged the wooden base, it was not going to move.

My GE started to trip the breaker whenever the door was opened. Otherwise worked fine. Turns out the door has 2 switches which must operate exactly together or the unit trips the breaker.

Big Red... snap a picture of your boat microwave space. If it is a wooden base that is the issue, and this base is going to be hidden when the microwave is neatly installed, why not remove the wooden base (assuming that it is too think and a thinner piece has room for insert) and replace with a thinner piece that will give you the space you need. You will have something that fits and the insides will be hidden by the trim. I have to believe that the Tappan microwave was purchased and installed because it was convenient at the time. The install was not something that was unique. They examined the space and built it up to the chosen purpose. What one man can build up another can modify to his needs.
I am not able to be of much more help because I have not seen the 44 Hunter inside. But having seen the many boats at the Annapolis show this year, they all are pretty much using commercially available appliances and adapting their interiors to accept them. This is done with build up materials and trim.

Note that most electrical appliances have at least some need for air movement to maintain the temp of the internal electrics. If you are removing the feet have some way for air to be circulated around the casing.

Thank you. In my previous post, I mentioned that we did try to remove the wooden base but it is TIGHTLY glued/cemented to the counter-top. We knew once the finished face plate came off, we'd be home free if we removed the base. But that was easier said than done. Thought before we move forward with sawing the wooden base perhaps someone in the user group experienced a similar failure and found a suitable replacement. It's always a bit easier to replace than to redesign or retrofit. LOL Hunter is now building the wall area to accommodate the 10.2H now standard for the mini-compact microwaves.

Yes, removing the feet was not a good option.

We are no longer on board but will be in a matter of weeks. I could try to send a picture at a later date .

Is it plywood or some other engineered wood, such as MDF? If so, could a chisel or "slick" and mallet get it started? At least down to the adhered veneer ply?

Ah, good point. Perhaps so. We will certainly take our chisel. We were going to make a groove in the wood (a channel) to afford more height and allow the feet room to slide in. But, after several hours of first working with the electrician, the two repair shops then multiple shopping trips to purchase, then return microwaves, we through in the towel for the time being and thought to ask the forum. It was time to lock her down as Hurricane Michael passed through.
