I replaced mine about a year ago. I should look at it again because I suspect they don't last very long, and I should have gotten more than one spare. The part is available in the States from McMaster Carr. The part number is #90681A293 and described as a #4 X 4" stainless tapered pin, .167" small end diameter, .250" large end diameter. The taper seems right but the pin is long and will need to be cut short after being driven home.

Wow! I've been off line for a few days (work). Spending most of my free time working on Lyric with the intent of undoing the ravages the Mexican sun did to her. Goal is to be in the water by the end of the month. Anyway, got on line to know if anybody has a source for tapered pins and find the information! Question though, which end has to be cut?

Thanks Craig! Walt

Hi All

Believe me the tapered pin is noty needed. Having broken quite a few due to the tides here in teh UK and my Vega drying out I have now removed teh tapered pin for the last four seasons. Much easier

Cheers

Hi Steve and all.
Following Steve's advice I don't bother with taper pins - mine has been
broken for some time.

I do check after a sail in strong winds that the rudder post has not
slipped. It hasn't yet but I keep the Allen key to hand just in case....

Question: the bronze base bolted to the cockpit sole (through which the
rudder post passes) is not "centred", ie not aligned exactly with the axis
of the boat.

Is this normal? Compensating for the geometry of the rudder??

Thanks

Hi Walt, After driving the pin tight both ends will need to be cut with a hack saw and cleaned up with a file. Perhaps if I keep an eye on the hex bolt this one will last.
I also have not been able to take the boat out for some months as the mast was in my front yard, but she's back together now and I just came back from an afternoon sail. It felt great.
