Gill - The attached photo shows the area under my aft floor. The foto was taken from the entry way hatch looking down. The floor is obviously up & so is the removable tank (just visible at the top of the foto). My integral aft tanks can be seen just below the shaft. The reason I have this all apart is because I just installed an additional cutlass bearing at the fwd end of my stern tube. This can also be seen in the foto. I bored-out the stern tube extra big, aligned the engine/shaft & then injected epoxy around the bearing (after applying liberal amounts of wax). Next, I have to get the bearing back out, clean-up any excess epoxy, clean it all up & put it back together. I'm planning on launching at the end of the month after a 1 1/2 yr haul-out. What was your reasoning for a second

bearing on the shaft? I presume that you still plan a shaft seal of some sort and the engine is on flexable mounts. Do you have a very flexable coupling between the transmission and the shaft? Your work looks nice.

Because...

The reason I added the fwd bearing is because... I recently measured the shaft & it was slightly bent. I did the math & my shaft was almost too long between bearings. Installing the additional bearing significantly reduces the unsupported length between bearings. I am also adding a Tides Marine dripless seal that force-feeds water past both bearings. I didn't know this before I began investigating, but fore & aft cutlass bearings are not that unusual. I probably over-engineered it, but what the heck?? Rick

Because...

I added the 2nd bearing because my shaft recently measured out of tolerence for straightness. I did the math & it was border-line too long between supports. After some head-scratching & investigating, I learned that fwd & aft cutlass bearings are not too uncommon. I also added a Tides Marine dripless seal system that force-feeds water aft thru both bearings. Maybe I over-engineered it?? Rick
