Jim, Can you tell me how to go about putting in gauges on my holding tank, and water tanks? I think not knowing what is remaining of capacity is the most frustrating aspect of cruising. I understandthe new Passages come that way. Can I order their gear? Mike

Out of luck

I have also called Hunter about getting something for my 42. Was told that each sending unit is custom for each size tank. Don't know where you are located but Doc Freemans mades a sending unit that would work and I think is the same as Hunter uses. You need to know how deep the tank is first. It is made out of alum. tubing. It has something that moves up and down depending on how full the tank is. You then use any type 12 volt gauage. Total cost is around $90 per tank for everything. What does Hunter use today for a sending unit for the holding tank? TP could clog the sending unit so it doesn't float up and down. If you want to talk about the differnet ways of doing it we can take it to a different form.

Tankwatch or Wema

I put a Wema tank monitor in the holding tank and installed the gauge near the button for the fwd. head. You just have to cut a hole in the top of the aluminum tank and run power to the tank or gauge location. Cutting the hole was easy for me since I replaced the tank at the same time. I also purchased a Tankwatch III, which (I think) has lights for 1/2 3/4 & full. I still have the Tankwatch but probably won't use it. E-mail me if you're interested.

Don't use aluminum tubing in a holding tank!

It's fine in water...but urine will eat through it.

Every two days

We have no gauges on our P42 but know our capacities. Our general rule of thumb is with 4 people on board, if they all took showers and we ate on board and had dishes to wash, then we need to take on water and pump out the holding tank every 2 days. It works. We have never run out of water or overflowed the holding tank [35 gal]. We have run a water tank down to nothing but have always had enough left in the other to get us through. [I try to balance our water use. If both tanks are full, I start on the port tank to eliminate the lean to port from the weight. After the first round of showers, I switch to the forward tank. I stay on forward until I think it is about empty, then switch back to port tank. Sometimes forward runs out before I switch back to port.] I think gauges would only tell me what I already know: its time to take on water or its time for a pump out.

What would work?

What type of sending unit would be the best to use for the holding tank?

I like the outside foil strips

They'll work on any material but metal. If you have a metal tank, I'd go with the SeaLand Tankwatch III...3 senders that can be adjusted to give a true "empty," "half," and "full" reading in any size tank.

42 WEMA GAGUES

I added two sets of WEMA gagues to my boat. 1 for the holding tank and a unt that has a picture of a boat and has 5 tank reading on it. This works very well but it was difficult to get to the large water tank under in the saloon. I am extremely happy with this system. Where are you located. I am in Dana Point CA. I have a guy who installes this unit. Supreme Yachts. Let me know?

Do you know where I can buy the units? I can install them myself if I could just find them. What type of sending unit do they use for the holding tank. You need something that won't clog up.

Roy's Right: Use 954-463-1075

I tried the email address Roy listed and it seemed to be a home base. However I then used the phone number Roy gave (supplied by Hunter) and got immediate results and a replacement for my Holding tank sensor shipped same day, arriving two days later via UPS Blue label. BTW, the new holding tank sensor has a back flush hose attachment to the top to help keep it clean. The web address is interesting but of little help. Great service.

No holes with Acu Gauge

Forgot to mention.. no holes in any tanks.. Man,, this is fantastic.. Sure beats putting in holes and relying upon flotation devices.. what do you all think floats easily in your holding tank? .. surely not floats... Go Acu Gauge and thanks to Miss Peggy for recommending. Jim

Bill - the sending unit comes with the package. I don't know where you get the Acugage but it sounds like it won't work on our aluminum tanks anyway. You can get a Wema at Fisheries/Crow's Nest (North Lk. Union) or you can get a Tankwatch at Marine Sanitation (right next door) or at Doc's. But... I have a new Tankwatch III I'll sell you cheaper! (That's the one Peggie recommended.) Just e-mail me at chriskat@ricochet.net.
