tank gauges on

Peggy et alI think I know the answer to this but wanted some corroboration from the expert or someone with experience.I replaced the holding tank some time ago and would have preferred to add a tank monitor with external sensor but presumed it would never be accurate. As you can see from the pic, the tank (40 gallon cap) is quite thin vertically once installed - about 6 inches high. Would a tank monitor be precise enough to warrant installation or would the typical rocking over such a wide surface area negate any reasonable measurement?By way of example, a slow rocking motion would result in the contents moving drastically from 0 - 6 inches making it appear as an instantaneous change from empty to full depending on what side the sensor is.

Once calibrated, it'll give an accurate reading

Contents of any tank moves even more than 6" when a boat heels, so it wouldn't be a problem if installed correctly and calibrated. The Profile gauges http://ferriellosales.com/default.php are the easiest to calibrate, and Dennis will give you all the help you need to get it installed and calibrated.

Don, I hope you have better luck than me.....

I put in a new tank like yours (Triple M) and I used my PVC rod transducer that I had previously used with my metal tank. It was made by Snake River. The actual top to bottom measurement is about 9 inches and the PVC rod has the foil inside. So it is similar to using foil on the outside- but maybe there is a subtle difference in the implementation.Anyway, my SR gauge is not accurate. It seems to lose it's calibration and tank sloshing definitely causes erratic readings. Maybe the Profile manufacturer has a better design.I have thought about changing to an outside foil in the hopes that a larger area of foil would give a larger signal voltage and might be more stable. Possibly it might be best to apply the foil on a diagonal instead of vertically so that there might be a greater change in voltage between empty and full. I haven't done this- yet.

Rich, give Dennis at Profile gauges a call

The Profile senders will work with your SR panel. SR is out of business now...the gauges they made during their last year or two in business are notorious for calibration failure...a problem the Profile gauges do NOT have. I suggest that both of you talk with Dennis about the best place to put the sender on the tank to ensure accurate readings.

Catalina 387 Tank

is very similiar to the design of your tank. It mounts in the shower wall of the hull. The tank monitor works just fine. Remember that the monitor only reads the level periodically. It is not a continious reading device.
