My old single axle trailer is bent from too much weight (the 23.5 weighs alot more than advertised!) Who makes a good tandem trailer for a '94 23.5 Hunter at a reasonable price along the Gulf Coast? TKS

Champion Trailers

Arturo, Champion Trailers in Slidell, LA makes trailers. Rick Webb converted his 23.5 single axle to a tandem and ordered everything from Champion. So you have two options there. convert or buy brand new. www.championtrailers.com

Is Your Boat Back in Pensacola?

What Jonathan said. I'll add I am very happy with it and glad I done it. Good luck with the storm. I know Ivan was tough on you maybe this one will be more wind than water and won't be as bad. I'm on my way to pull mine out come on over after next week if you want to see the trailer.

Rick - good idea

Zero damage to home/dock/property and the 23.5 but I'm glad our church parking lot is only 2 miles from here and had the perfect place to park the boat. I'm not skilled enough to modify the trailer but that's a good idea and I will start checking around to see if I could hire a local to do the work using champion parts. Hope you came through Dennis with no losses.

We did Great

Champion trailer will do the work if you want to drag it over there. Drop it off on the way to New Orleans and pick it up on the way back. What you describe may not be bending but rust and it breaking be careful with it.

What parts used in conversion ?

Rick, What part numbers need to be ordered from Champion for a replacement axle, hubs and springs on the 23.5 trailer ? Thanks.

What about a single 7000 pounder?

There is a poster here (Nils Anderson) who believes a single 7000 pound axle is preferable to dual 3500's. Nils has a H260. He's an engineer and made other significant changes to the trailer as well. I just thought I'd mention this in case it is an idea that you hadn't considered. I wish I had thought of it when I replaced the single axle on my H23.5 trailer with a new single 3500 pounder. I won't try to defend the reasons. A single 7000# has to be better than a single 3500#, but there are differences of opinion when it comes to dual 3500# compared to a single 7000#. The objections that Nils got were partly due to the weight of the H260 and I'd say don't really apply when we're talking about a 3200 pound load. After all, you have a 23.5 that the factory sent out with a single axle in the first place. I searched the archives and found two threads for you.. Addendum: posting the archive links seem too long to work. Search the archives for 2003 and 2004 for posts with the words "Nils Anderson" as author, smaller boats forum. One of the subjects was "Towing H260 7,500 Miles". It is split across the two years. Another thread seems to have a blank subject. ...RickM...

Another question for Rick Webb

Rick did you add one more axle, or put on two new ones? What was their weight rating; what about brakes, and what did your modifications do to total trailing weight numbers? Before talking with my local guy I want to know more so I know what is needed, not what he wants to sell me!! TIA

Replaced the Single One with Two New Ones

I removed the single axle, cut the mounting ears off installed the mounting bracket from http://www.championtrailers.com/ Trailers as far forward as they would go. The axles were built by Champion out of 2 X 3 box tube with the spindles welded on top they are rated at #3500 each. This gives them a drop though not as great a drop as the facory axle. The brakes were removed and installed on one of the new axles. You may want to think about just replacing the brakes mine were new the year before so I just swaped them over. With the two axles you could use smaller wheels I already had another pair so I did not. Let me know if you'd like to come by and study it. We are kinda in a mess here we were repainting before Dennis came through so we have stuff out and all over between all of that and my wife's sister's family coming to visit next week. I was very intriged by the single axle trailer under the 260 setup but I figure I can go further and faster on three wheels than on one if a tire goes flat. It also sreads the weight out more when on soft surfaces like my yard where I park my trailer. Here is the link for the kit I bought. Sorry I had missed your question earlier Mike.
