I am having a tough time finding a color match for the tan non-skid areas on our ODay 34. Would appreciate a reference...Boatersworld and West Marine are in the immediate area, but their tan is too light for a match. Thanks. Chess

Gel coat color match

I have a small 2oz. jar of a colored Gel coat patch filler that was given to me years ago by Chuck Rezevic who was the head Foreman at the Lear Siegler O'Day plant in Fall River Ma. I had called him about finding gel coat voids in the cockpit of my new 1986 O'Day 222, and he said that he would get me some filler and meet me at the Newport Boat show, which he did. I still have the small jar that he gave me, although the filler is all dried up and isn't usable anymore. The color is called "Tidal Sand". It's probably the same stuff that you're looking for. The small jar has the Lear Siegler logo on it, but down at the bottom of the label it reads; Made by GCP Manufacturing PO Box 15787 Seattle WA. 98115. I Googled it, and that company is still in business although they are in a different location. I think that if you get in touch with them, you may be able to find out about this color, or possibly obtain it from them. It's worth a shot. Good luck, and let me know how you made out. Joe

Gel Coat

Chess, I've never had much luck trying to work with Gel Coat because it needs to be sealed properly so that it can cure from the inside out. I have some small void areas of non-skid that needs attention, but then you run into the problem of how to duplicate the non-skid so that it blends in with the rest of the surface. So, a few years ago I got this brain storm and went to a ceramic shop and obtained a small quantity of clay to use as a stamp. The plan was to press the clay into an area of non-skid an transfer the surface to the clay. I brought the clay back to the shop to have it fired up in the kiln and it came back all cured and ready to use, but for some reason or another, I never did do the Gel Coat because other things came up. I had bought some mold release liquid called "PCV Mold Release", and was going to spray it over the Gel-Coat to seal it. Maybe some day I'll give it another shot, but Gel-Coat really needs to be sprayed on, in order to come out looking good and I've never had the equipment to do it. There's a guy who runs a boatyard in my area that does excellent fiberglass and Gel-Coat repair. You could never tell where the damage was when he got through with the repair, but then again, he has the equipment and know how which is something I don't have. Rudy Nickerson used to have the O'Day cream color Gel-Coat at his shop, but I don't know if he still carries it anymore. Gel-Coat doesn't have much of a shelf life, according to Rudy. He told me that if you refrigerate it, it will last longer and if you freeze it, it will last indefinitely. Good luck! Joe
