Has anyone retro-fitted the Harken Battcar system? I am thinking of putting it on my 2004 H33. If you believe the hype it would seem to be the cheapest and most efficient way to raise, lower and reef the main at all points of sail and without the potential problems associated with furling systems. The ability to fit the system without taking the mast down also has appeal. I would like to hear from anyone who has recently had experience with it.

We thought about it on our 470, but on

the advice of our sail maker went with the Tides Marine system insead. The track slides up you existing track, their cars then attach to it. We are very pleased a year latter. The sail goes up an down with ease. I've included the link for your consideration. Dick McKee S/V ONE9TEEN

works well

we have Harken Battcars on our mast. Regardless of what system you install, you'll be amazed at the difference in ease of handling the mainsail -it's not "hype". All Harken systems i believe all now come with Delrin balls which will last much longer than other types. If you are considering competitive brands, you might want to inspect them close-up to see what the difference(s) are in terms of physical size and strength. Harken cars come in various sizes so as to withstand various sail size loads as well as minimize stack height if that's important to you. In terms of service, I can only tell you my experience with Harken. We had a problem 2 years ago breaking one of the cars (operator error) and they were extremely helpful in both offering to determine the cause of the problem so as to preclude recurrence as well as offering a discounted repair.
