Tall Ship Sighting

I’m fortunate to live in the St Lawrence seaway where I often see tall ships underway, crewed by young people starting their journey to “find themselves”. I’m somewhat envious of the adventure they have as at that age I was already working and perhaps taking a different path on that journey we all take.

I saw this beauty today off Fairfield Park near Kingston on a typical thermal wind day. There is a reason they held the 1976 Olympic sailing events in Kingston! :)

I’m always amazed at how fast they can tack if handled properly.

I don’t recognize the flag flying on the top of the mast. Anyone have a guess?

When I zoom in on my original photos of the tack I see only three people on deck. Two midships and one at the bow.

She is Playfair from Toronto.

Playfair is one of three sister ships designed by Frances Maclachlan in Kingston, ONT. The other ships are the St. Lawrence II based in Kingston and Ontario, currently on the hard in Oswego, NY. There is another ship, Fair Jeanne that sail(ed) on Lake Ontario, I think she is out of service now and she may be another sister ship.

Here's a video of the St Lawrence II anchoring under sail in Stella Bay, ONT near Kingston. Stella is a small bay and some boat had anchored in the entrance to the bay making it difficult for the St Lawrence to enter the bay. Eventually, the skipper came to his senses, put down the cam corder and moved his boat. The St Lawrence then sailed into the bay. (Not the best quality video, it was an early attempt.)

A few days later we ran into Black Jack sailing out of Ottawa. Interesting boat, started out as a tug, became a luxury yacht, now a sail training boat.

Full disclosure: I am deeply involved in the Ontario project. It has an interesting history and we are trying to finish the boat and establish a program similar to that of the St Lawrence II, Playfair, and Black Jack. If you are interested in supporting our effort or would like more information, please contact me.

I’m familiar with the St Lawrence II as she’s something of a Kingston fixture :)

Great adventure and learning experience for a lot of people!

I witnessed this “race” yesterday evening. :)
Playfair rolled right past the newer vessel downwind.
