Tall Rigg vs. Regular?

I am planning to buy a Catalina 27' but can't find out (on the web at least) what in detail the difference between a "27 Catalina Tall Rigg" and a regular "27 Catalina" is! Any comments might help (email appreciated to: pathfinder.xe@gmx.net).Thanks

For cruising, it's about 6 of 1, half dozen of the other. If you're racing, the extra sail area is a bonus but if you're not really interested in serious performance sailing, don't worry about it. The TR does have a cute little bowsprit though! ;-)LaDonna

Tall or std

The tall rig with the bowspirit is difficult to carry a plow or Bruce deployed on the bow. Also if you use a mooring you need a bridle..However, the larger genny give you more drive, especially in lighter airs. it balances well in heavy air.

The Air up There

The Tall Rig carries more square feet of sail area. This yeilds two results - better performance in light air (and much better performance in medium air), and greater heel (read: early reefing) in heavy air. All depends on where you sail.I'm glad I have a Tall Rig until a storm pops up. Looking back on it though, Tall Rig/Standard Rig wouldn't have kept me from buying the boat. Either one is great!If you want to race, the ultimate C-27 setup is Tall Rig, Outboard, Fin Keel.Best Regards, Rob

Um, I think you might want to check the rules for the Catalina 27 Class racing if that is what you are thinking.. I think it excludes tall rigs.

We had a 27 tall rig, until we moved up to a Catalina 34. We was astounded at the performance in light

Tall rig might cost a little more to moor

When I applied for moorage at the marina where I keep my boat, they wanted to know if I had a tall rig with a bow spit or not. They charge by the foot and go by the overall length, not the hull length. A 28 foot boat cost $173 (CDN) more per year then a 27 and a 29 would be $345 CDN more.Paul1974 Catalina 27Vancouver BC
