Tall rig with 2 reef points

How many of the tall rig owners have 2 reef points in the main? I have read that the standard reef point in the tall rig main brings the main down to the size of the standard rig main.

Is there a need to match the reef point in the standard main?

Your question is subject to the conditions you expect to sail.

To understand the percentage of your sail reefed is more important than any theoretical standard or expectation. Each sail can be altered to meet the request of the owner.

If you plan to sail in high wind conditions you might need a 60% sail. So it might be a 2 reef sail not a single reef sail you want.

On the other hand what you have may be exactly what you need.

I have sewn in a second reef myself and even consider a third one on my CP-22 TR-FK...... Second reef a must in my opinion....not that i know much....

Maybe not a "must", but very nice to have. Our C22 main has two reefs, and it's not even a tall rig. We use the second point regularly. Keeps the stress level down, the comfort level up, the safety level up, lets you sail in conditions you otherwise might not, and it keeps the Admiral happy. What's not to love??

I start to go out more often when there is a small craft advisory - perfect wind conditions for some serious sailing but sometimes overpowering with a full main up....

At what wind strength do you start to feel overpowered? 10 knots, 20, 25?

Greater than 20-25 kts depending on wave action.... I sail on eastern/lower Long Island Sound and depending on current/tide it can get pretty rough sometimes...

I would have guessed that was the condition on Lake George.
As such the double reefing option is likely not needed.
As you expand your sailing ground so too can you expand the sails in your sailing locker.
