Tall rig vs standard rig

I've noticed that Catalina makes several models in a standard and a tall rig version. I'm looking at two Catalina 34s, one tall and one standard. Here in Seattle with light winds being the norm, it might make more sense to go with the tall rig. Or maybe not. Does anyone have any opinions on whether a tall rig is worth the extra cost? I'm willing to reef earlier if I can get more boat speed. Thanks, Trevor

Tall rig

We have a 36 and went for the tall rig, little more sail area, does not go under as many bridges. I can fly full sails to 20 knotts, and reef after that. Bob C-36

Does it really matter that much?

Maybe it's just me, but it wouldn't really that big of a factor for me if I was choosing. Perhaps that's because I'm not what one might call a "performance" sailor. I just like to play. For me, the boat in the best condition, nicest interior layout, best sails, best engine, etc. would be the one I chose. Let us know what you decide (and post some pix). LaDonna

For the 30, it's a big deal!

I don't know about the 34 (or 27), but for the Cat 30, it makes a HUGE difference in light wind sailing. Here on the Chesapeake bay, winds tend to be very light in August, and when others with standard rig 30s in the fleet (Catalina Fleet 30) are just bobbing up and down flapping their sails, I'm still moving at a decent clip. I've got the tall rig w/ bow sprit and have a 150% Genoa. It can really make a big difference. But LaDonna is right on that I'd rather have a nicer standard rig than a beat up tall rig.
