The tall rig mast is 2' taller, a few square feet more of sail area for both the main and jiob. There is also the bow sprit version adding more area to the jib. The tall rig and bow sprit versions are a little faster.
When racing C30's in one class, standard, tall rig and bow sprit together, seconds (time) are added or deducted to the finish time. Other factors such as 2 or 3 blade prop, fixed or folding, size of jib or genoa are also calculated to make all as close to equal as possible.

The tall rig not only has a little more sail area, but the sail area center of effort is moved forward while the center of lateral resistance remains the same. In English this means that the tall rig does not suffer the degree of weather helm that is a problem with std C30s, and yes, it does tend to point a little better.
Regardless of performance, and I do not race my 30, I for one love the look of the bowsprit that adds to the "saltier" appearance of the vessel. The bowsprit provides better anchor stowage as well.

I have owned my C-30 TR-BS since it was new in 1982 and I would hae no other rig for Long Island Sound conditions. It is a winner when racing in light air, giving up a 12 second per mile handicap (which is considerable) versus the standard rig, but more than makes up for it in light air, but in more thatn seventeen knots the standard rig performs as well. Of course, in over seventeen knots you are having to push a fat boat through square waves which is a detriment in itself.

The tall rig has a great anchoring arrangement. I keep a 33 pound bruce on the sprit with a chain stopper holding it in place.
In 15 knots of wind you do need to sail with a reef if you have a 150% jib. My next jib will be a 135%. My next main will have two reef points in it.
All in all, the Tall rig is a nice set up but it can be slightly tippier. I will say that there is an Erickson 35 on my dock that has a slightly shorter mast than my Catalina 30 tall rig!

Do you have any idea where I might be able to get a used Cat. 30 Std. racing Main? Cant seem to locate anything. Most folks seem to race the TR.

If you are looking for a racing sail, the best thing to do is go to a sail maker and have him design it for your boat. That way the fit will be exact and it will be an optimized sail.
True - but my goal is to save some $, while at the same time getting something a bit better than my orig. main. I figure that someone who races a lot would possibly have a set or two that they no longer use. I am not looking to race.
Try to hit up the sail maker in December. They are looking for work then and you can save some money!
