Got another question for you tall rig owners! I'm looking at an 86 tall rig. The question I have is about the salon layout. This boat has a u-shaped settee with a pedestal table that is removable as opposed to the standard L-shaped settee with a fold down table. Does anyone have any information about this? I have searched everywhere I can think of and can't find this layout anywhere--even on the Catalina website! I'm stumped.

We have the same layout
Our '84 has that layout, as do a number of others - it has been an option for most of the production run. I like it, primarily for the storage afforded under the forward settee. It has nothing to do with tall or standard rigs.

Next question!!! We have the regular L-shaped dinette and with five of us, four are on the L-shaped bench and one is on a handy folding wooden chair in the aisle. While we all fit fine, we've often discussed converting ours to the U-shaped in order for the "first" one in to have a way out without all the rest of us moving or crawling under the table. Since you will probably be in port to use the table most of the time, anyway, you will have the added bonus of easy in and out convenience. Bon appetite!

Rob's '87 C30 SR had the same layout. He ended up taking the table out and it made for a very roomy cabin (though you had to eat off your lap). Exactly what info were you looking for? LaDonna

Thanks for all the input. I had just never seen this layout on a catalina 30 before and was curious. I'm happy to report that it looks like I will be officially joining the family in the coming weeks. I should be ordering a survey next week. If all goes well, you know how the story ends.

It's a good idea
I'm adding air conditioning this winter to an 88 CAT30. I'm going to make the U shaped area. The A/C goes under the added seating. I've long wanted to get rid of the long table hanging off the bulkhead. I've long wanted a table that can be up all the time. I think it's a great advantage.

I also have the pedestal table and like it very much. On the plus side, it makes a much better surface for plotting bearings on a chart. On the down side, you sacrifice about an inch of headroom as compared to the traditional layout models.
