I am looking at a tall rig C 30 in excellent condition, but I am wondering if this boat is right for the southern Calif coast. The owner says he has to reef in SF Bay when wind gets above 15 knots. My previous C 30 standard rig was really stiff up to 20 knots. Who can tell me about their experience with a tall rig, and what are the advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks, yes, of course you have to reef sooner, but my question is really how soon? Do others who have a tall rig find it more of a hassle? Does the tall rig tend to give more or less weather helm? Are those with tall rigs happier or sorry??

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Tall rig has a few advantages. If it is tall rig bow sprit then you have a great anchor platform.

If it concerns you then you can simply fly a smaller headsail. You can go down to a 110% Genoa and that does fine. I have a 100% that I use in higher winds and I can fly a full main with that small headsail. It sails and points well with that configuration.

If you have to reef then do it early. It is nice to have two reef points (I only have one but will get two when I replace this main).
