I have been looking at some 22' to 25' sailboats and thinking about the stern lettering. I am down to the last couple of things to do. I have gone back and forth between centering the letters knowing the rudder will obstruct the view or all the way off to the side. I am going to install a stainless swim ladder, so again that would obstruct the lettering. With an outboard, rudder, and swim ladder on the back, the options for stern lettering is not great. I finally decided to go with the middle as the the boat will be dry sailed most of the time and I am putting the name large on both rear side hulls near the back. I have also seen this arrangement on quite a few boats this size.

Now that I finished the stern I am seriously second guessing what I have done.

The font isn't super readable and the rudder will obscure some or much of it. I guess that i would leave it for now and see how it wears. You can always change it .

Unless you see it from dead astern with the rudder centered, half of it will be obscured. Nice color, though.

Looks okay, but since you are putting it aft on both sides, I wonder why you did the stern...

I think I remember you saying you and your wife are teachers? In that case the name is very appropriate... I might not be the sharpest match in the toolbox :doh:

Whatever you do there are going to drawbacks. Go with what you have done. It won't inhibit your ability to have a good time aboard Recess. An option might be to put the name on the side of the hull,but then, those looking at the stern could not see it. See what i mean?

I wanted to make sure that I had the boat covered in case the stern was an issue so I did the name three feet long by one and a half foot high on both side of the hull right near the stern. The lettering on the stern was more just for show. The more I think about it, I will probably remove this and go small but fat Recess off to the side where the swim ladder will be, much like John did. Sometimes you have to do something to know it really does not work for you. Luckily the letters will come off easily.

Your memory serves you right. We both thought this will be our time away from school so Recess just felt right. I have booked myself into a field experience workshop for the next three years. I get one paid week with hotel provided during the summer in St. Augustine Florida in 2010, Charleston South Carolina in 2011, and then Port Canaveral Florida for 2012 for national History conferences. When I saw the locations where all good sailing destinations, I said You bet I will join this program! All less than a days towing for the boat.

If you decide to change it

do a mock-up with photoshop before you apply the new letters. It's easier to delete.
