taking on water

We are taking on water through the head. All of the seacoks are closed. The water rises up into the head until it is equal to the outside water level then, of course stops. It fills the head about half way. After pumping into the holding tank it promptly fills again. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Alex

There are only 2 ways this can occur. Either the joker valve is bad (most likely) or the inlet seacock has failed (least likely, but possible). I would start diagnosis by pumping out the holding tank and then see if the inflow to the head stops. That would indicate a bad joker valve. You can then check the seacock by removing the inlet hose from the barb at the seacock and see if there is inflow. Be very carefull. If you have an older boat, the seacock is likely attached to a bronze pipe nipple, which is in turn bedded in epoxy to creat a thu-hull fitting. Prone to failure after 20 years or so. Good luck.

Brad's right

Hey Alex, Brad is right on. It's probably the joker valve. It's an easy fix. Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632
