Taking on water

I have an '89 Hunter 23. I recently noticed a lengthwise crack in the port side storage compartment; just forward of the companionway. When the boat heels to port, water seeps into that compartment. The water is brown in color and can be considerable. There is no water in the keel bolt areas. This crack just recently appeared. Any ideas? Is my boat going to sink? Will my keel fall off?

Check the caulking around your chainplates

Bobby: You didn't say whether the crack was in the hull or not, although I suspect that if it were in the hull and you are talking about the storage compartment beneath the port settee, your boat would have sunk by now (this area is at, or just below, the waterline). I had a similar problem last year and traced it to the caulking around the chainplates. The caulking was old and no longer flexible, so it let water in when it rained or when I washed the boat. The water seeped down the chainplates and the wooden bulkhead into the storage area under the settee. It collected against the rear bulkhead by the companionway, because there was nowhere for it to run out into the keelbolt area. If the bulkheads under your chainplates shows signs of watermarking or staining, that's your problem. Until you can re-caulk your chainplates (check the seal of your windows as well while you're at it), inspect all the compartments on both sides of the boat every time you go aboard. A sponge and bucket will get rid of any water in a jiffy. Good luck. Peter s/v Raven

Rain water

I recommend you also check the rubrail seal over the hull/deck joint. I had a lot of rain water comming in on my '86 h23 untill I resealed the upper side of the joint. I am told that you should not seal the lower side of the rubrail. sv "Miss Brandy"

crack

I have read the responses but the key is the crack just appeared. Please be more definite about the length, location and so forth. Is it in the hull, rubrail area or what? Please be more descriptive. Thanks

rubrail

Hmmmmmm........don't seal underneath the rubrail huh? I noticed that the caulking beneath my rubrail was cracking so I recently resealed it. So why not?
