My trusty 22 is taking on water under sail. This started last year. Taking on about 2 gallons per hour under moderate stress. Medium to high wind conditions. This year it is worse taking on 2 to 4 gallons per hour even with slight wind. My only through the hull fitting is for the sink. This seems fine. I seldon heel up far enough to have waves hitting the gunwale. I am stumped by this. She takes on no water at the dock.

I have been baffled by this and have done the following: -ground out, reglassed the rear hull/keel joint. The crack was only a hairline to begin with. -new bottom paint job this spring. Close inspection revealed nothing remarkable. -sealed lower rear gudgeon bolts (rudder) with 5200 inside and out. - fixed a crack in the cockpit drain tube which exits the transom. This was a bugger to access by climbing head first down the port quarter berth. -checked thru hull for the sink. no problems, and water is NOT back syphoning while under sail. Yet still I'm getting this mystery water in the bilge! Arrrgghh. :-( -checked the archives for any other clues. I can't see any other possible way for the water to come in, yet it does. Out of frustration I am about to install a bilge pump as my last resort, although in the 22 this is a challenge. Kind of seems like treating the symptom rather than the cure. I'm almost to the point of filling the bilge with water while on the trailer to see if water will seep from the leak point. Good luck with this one and I will be avidly checking other replies...

Winter Storage..........
I think O'Days are built strong enough.. Somewhere I read that one of the sailboat mfg's didn't want their boat stored on a roller style bunk trailers. Use a solid bunk trailer to spread the load over larger area. I wonder if there is a crack as the result of winter storage and hull support. Snow accumulation can be very heavy. A marine survey might be in order here. Keep us all posted as we are ancious to knoew too.

steve, I would have put money on the sink drain (especiall if it is only under sail. Do you have a bilge pump drain as well?? I would take some baby powder, and dust all the trhu hull fittings (sink,bilge, motor brackets,etc,etc.) and see after a sail where the powder is wet. good luck mike c. O'28 "Da Capo"

I also had water in my bulge after a day of sailing. Check and see if there is a service loop on the hose that goes to or from your thru haul. There needs to be a loop higher than your fitting so that water doesn't back up when your boat is on a heel. It took me awhile to trace my water in the bulge, but after I added the loop my problem went away.

Not sure about this. Was wondering if the tube for the centerboard pendant might have a crack and be leaking. Don't know how the pendant works on the 22. I have a 23 and suppose if there is enough water pressure while under sail and was cracked at the base it could allow water into the bilge.

Me too...
Our 23' O'day takes on water when we're on a close tack in 15+ mph winds. We can't figure out where it's coming from. It happens when we're really heeled over (over 20 degrees). I'm afraid it's coming in the joint between the deck and the hull... It also leaks when it rains, but not to the same degree... Waaah... Any ideas?

instead of a loop in the drain, why not install a valve at the thru hull? keep it closed when not using sink and when not onboard. gene

Suggest you check the drian in your transom. I had a simular problem and it ended up being an old radiator hose that was dry rotted.On my boat I had to reach around a seat with a hatch , twist around to the transom and examine the hose.The hose had no bottom to it. Water would leak into the boat instead of thru the drain and out the rear of the transom. Let me know your findings and if this is the case I will let you in on how to repair.

Mike from NY had it right . The sink drain through hull fitting is the problem. My son spotted it this weekend in a stiff Enersto Breeze. Saftly at the dock I reached down and the entiere fitting fell apart. Next step replacement. Many thanks to all. Much apreciated. Happy sailing!
