Oday 23 New River Az
Coming up toward the end of June I am going to be near Anaheim Ca as my wife and daughters have a conference there over 3 or 4 days. I would like to take my O'day 23 over with me and do a little sailing while I am there with my son. I have sailed (on others boats) out of San Pedro to Catalina Island, and some dinghy sailing in Mission Bay, but that is it over on the west coast.
Any information about places to launch and park my truck and trailer for a few days, destinations, etc, would be great. I would like to at least do a sail out, overnight and sail back type of thing. Possibly just do a couple of day sails and moor at the marina where I launch.

go out of Dana Point, sail to Oceanside and stay overnight, back to DP.
Oceanside has walk to restaurants, nothing spectacular but some choices.
Nice sail south usually and sometimes a great sail back.

If you needed over night parking we'd be happy to let you into our parking lot. There is a launch ramp in the harbor and there is a lift as well........ I have no knowledge whatsoever as to how you launch your size boat so forgive me, I just know what is available .

I was also going to suggest Dana Point. I would give them a call to check out your options.

The ramp was extended/rebuilt a couple years ago, should be good for your use. There are 2 small anchorages, east end near bait barge and fuel dock (not preferred) and west end (much better), just don't get too close to the corner of breakwall as there's a sand bar. Also transient docks available from Dana Marina.

My rig is fairly easy to launch, I just step the mast on the trailer, back into the water. I need to get about 4' of water midway p the trailer to float off nicely.
I hadn't thought of Oceanside, it has been many years since I had been there. Excellent suggestion.

I just took a look at the web site. I think that is exactly what I wanted to do. It doesn't appear there are any hazards, just a straight shot south. Is there a particular chart/coastal map I need? Anything to be aware of on the way down?

Occasionally when racing to Oceanside in around July, we have run into (almost literally) some navy boats off Camp Pendleton, that can get a little aggressive. We have had machine guns drawn on us with the 'request' to give their off loading boat 1000 yards. Other than that, its a pretty easy straight shot!!

You will have a good time!

Indeed !! Should have thought about that!!!!
Nothing like a couple of machine guns pointed at you by some 18 year olds in light winds with shouts to remove ourselves immediately. Funny it never occurred to us to start our motor and get out quickly.... Heck, we were in a race!

Went thru a couple years ago when they were testing a new armored personnel carrier, looked like a tank you could waterski behind. I got way too close to their course, the wake from that thing completely swamped the foredeck and the hatch was open !!!!

The military is just protecting the zone. We have had similar issues when traveling by Concord Navel weapons Station in the delta. Maintain your course and speed and everyone seems happy.

Agree and appreciate! Just did not realize what the rules were and then could not react quickly... We thought we were more than far off the zone.
Has happened in SD too, just not that easy to decipher where or what they consider too close and to what .. Until they approach.
