Taking a cruise next week

I have two weeks off starting next Tuesday. I am heading out for a little cruise into the Chesapeake Bay. I will be starting from my home port of Colonial Beach. It is about 30 nautical miles from Colonial Beach to Point Lookout (entrance to Chesapeake Bay).

I will make my way to the Chesapeake Bay. It make a day or two depending on wind, how early I get started, and how I feel. After that I plan to hit Solomons Island, MD. From there I have so many options it isn't funny.

I could go North East and go into the Choptank River (that gives me access to Cainbridge, Oxford, and the backside of St. Michaels from Santo Domingo Creek). I also have access to other areas.

If I go south east from Solomons I can go over to Smith Island. From there there is Tangier Island, Chrisfield, and Onancock. From those locations Deltaville is in that area as well.

Directly North I would have access to Deal, the Rhode River, and eventually Annapolis. I am not sure if I will venture as far north as Annapolis but it is possible.

I will base me cruise on wind and weather, of course. I will try to update as I go along.

One small concern is how much weight I will be carrying. I will have a full cooler, 6 gallon gas tank, and other cruising stuff. I am debating on carrying one of my folding bikes but this is also something to consider because it is a little heavy (a little less than 50 pounds). It won't fit in any of the lockers so I will have to stash it and move it around inside of the cabin. I will also be towing my dingy.

I also wonder about power consumption. I have 1 group 27 battery and my outboard does have an alternator. I also have a 5 watt solar panel (more of a trickle charger). I may have to take a slip to plug into shore power at some point.

I am very familiar with this area. Still, it is nice to have a cruising guide. If anyone hasn't checked it out, ActiveCaptain is a really cool app. It shows you a ton of information along with anchorages and what-not.

Bad, just think of the bike as a light-weight extra crew member who's had too much rum. :)

Razor makes a scooter with large wheels that is rated for a person of 220lbs. It folds and collapses into a small package and riding is easier and faster than walking. Model A5 Lux.

Have fun on your new boat! My wife and I were shopping a few years back for a larger boat when our business turned busy. We decided to stick with our little O'Day 23 because of limited time. I love most sailboats big and small, and all have their pros and cons, but we have been having a blast on short cruises keeping it simple! Have a good time!

We have a trailerable Starwind 223 that has seen more first class sailing venues than the big boat. The adventures are larger too.

I hope to see you out there!

John and Honey are out (in Annapolis yesterday). They asked about you. I am hoping to bump into them next week on their way back. They went up to Baltimore for the big goings on.

When you get to deltaville, hook around into fishing bay at the piankatank river and wave on the way by. I hope the weather holds out for you.

I am not sure if I will go north or south. It depends on the wind and weather.

Congrats on the great boat!

I didn't see if anyone mentioned it but how about stashing the bike in the dinghy? Lash it down well!

Bike is in the V-berth. I will have to move it to sleep.

Dingy is towed. Nice thing is that it rides on the boat trailer under the boat. Good setup!

I've been to St M via S.D. twice this year, dinghy to the town dock then a block to the main street. Off the Choptank, Irish Creek does NOT have that 10-foot channel! I went in on a Saturday without a problem with my 4'9" draft. Sunday morning i could not get out. The tow guy happened to be going by, so "poled" the depth with his boat hook. I could see he had maybe 3 feet all the way across. I had to wait for higher tide to get out. It is a nice, broad anchorage surrounded by land.

I draft 2'3" so I can sneak back into some cool places.

Where is Irish Creek?
