Jason and Spouse....

If you don't think much of a production boat crossing the atlantic, then please tell me why your asking production boat owners for advice on which boat to buy? Seems you would find an audience more to your thinking at seven seas. Why don't you just go here (http://www.ssca.org/sscabb/index.php?)

Jason, don't let Franklin chase you away!

Diversity is..... well, necessary! The SSCA forum is probably more suited to your needs, but there's a lot of wisdom here too. When you go to SSCA, I suggest you read some old threads about cruising boat choice. Jack Tyler has written extensively on the subject, to mention only 1 person in that category, and Evans Starzanger (the husband of Beth Lonard, author of 'The Voyager's Handbook) often often provides great insights as well. Liam, I'm surprised that your Beneteau is better than your previous Tayana. Specifics, please? (Tayana is on my list of blue-water cruising boats to buy). Tom, I really like your turn of phrase: "It is unfortunate that many of the things that make a boat great in port hurt it's suitability for blue water." Is it copyrighted? Or may I use it without attribution? Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8 (a production Hunter 31 and proud of it ;D

go for comfort

I am 56 now but sailed 27000 miles around the Indian ocean and Asia in a 50 ft sloop when I was 35-37. I have just purchased a 50ft ketch to cruise the Pacific begining 2006. 50 ft gives you plenty of room and stabiliy for creature comforts. It can be easily handled by one or two if set up well.

Actually, I'm kinda with Franklin on this one...

(which I think is a first.) I'm sick of folks posting here saying they've heard Hunters aren't so great, etc., etc., yet they want our opinion. Isn't that like going to someone's house for dinner and saying, just as you sit down to eat, that you've heard their cooking stinks?!? I was originally taken aback by the poster's seemingly wide open question, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. To then read that he has "reservations" about the "big 4", which we clearly represent and like for ourselves, is just insulting. Go to the Sabre, IP or other owner's groups if you want opinions on those boats. Just my 2 cents, which I'm free to add...;)

Questionable part

is how somebody can be so experienced but yet know so little about boats? Most sailors I know have opinions about boats and are constantly serving their opinions to others like it was beer. How could somebody be around sailors so much but feel they still need more opinions? Interesting indeed.

Beneteau and Other Production Boats

Just a note. I own a 36' Beneteau. A nice boat for nice sailing. Not a boat that is capable of blue water. Fin keel with a questionable capsize ratio. Production boats like my Beneteau are not up to the task. I want to hear from those who have done some serious passages. Thanks
