I'd try it as is and see if you like it before spending money on add-ons. I had no trouble with mine and found it easy to use. You generally lock it in place, set the throttle and stear with the rudder.

The larger small Mercury outboards have a "Grip Shift" throttle.
Twist the throttle one way for forward the other for reverse.
Perfect for this application but I think you must get at least an 8hp motor to have it

Got a Mercury 9.9 with the twist throttle, but still need a long extension to see where I am going from the helm.

I usually stand up to see forward and back into the slip
