Has anyone replaced the tack in a C30 with a Universal 1988 25? When I recently bought the boat I was told the alternator was replaced with one without a tack hookup. The hour meter worked. I have replaced the alternator with a new unit with a tack wire. Of course the tack does not work. I checked the wire from the tack to the engine, and it's OK. When the key is turned on, the hour meter works, and the tack needle flips up to 2800 and sticks there [same as before]. So, it would seem I need another tack? Has anyone a source, model, price etc? I have been getting 5 knots at what seems about half throttle guessing. Would anyone have the general rpm stats at various boat speeds? This forum is a life saver. Good sailing Ron B LHP Fl.

New Tachometer

You can order a new alternator-driven Tach from West Marine or other dealers. You will have to adjust it according to the numer of "poles" in the alternator - info you can get from the tach manufacturer. You can also adjust the tach with an engine RPM strobe light if you can borrow one from the yard.Another DIY method for Tachometer Timing: Place strip of white tape near outer edge of the face of the flywheel pulley. Shine a shore powered (60 cycle AC) fluorescent lamp on the pulley with engine running. At 1,800 RPM you should see four steady, stable tape marks hovering at 90 degrees from each other. Adjust the Tach. At 3,600 RPM (if your engine can rev that high)there will be two steady marks hovering at 180 degrees from each other.
