Went out sailing today in an 18 knot breeze and the pressure broke the tack ring which holds the JIB Tack down at the furler. The ring which holds the snap shackle just broke off. The unit is a FURLEX 100 and will need to be dissasambled to replace the broken part. My question is what is the simplest way of performing the repair? Will the sail have to be taken off and the forestay removed or can the unit be opened up as it hangs and will the guts(bearings and rings and swivels) slide down the forestay? Have never installed one of these so I'm not quite sure how to dissasamble it. The boat is a 2001 H320.

... I would do is contact Selden/Furlex and discuss this equipment failure with them. I have a Furlex 200-6 and it is probably of similar design, just bigger. I would guess that replacing the lower swivel ring would require dropping the sail, disconnecting the forestay, removing the upper swivel, removing the broken lower swivel (connected by two hexagonal screws on either side), and then sliding a new lower swivel down the extrusion and then reconnecting everything. I would hope/expect that Selden/Furlex would provide the parts free as this is an item that should last more many years unless defective or damaged. But I would still contact Selden/Furlex and see if they stand by their product and see how they recommend replacing it.

Contact Selden

Hello, I agree with Warren. At the end of last year, the snap shacle at the Halyard end broke. I contacted Selden and they shipped me a new one for a very good price. They were knowledgeable and very prompt. My boat is a 1986 and I think the furler is original. Barry
