Well I am still trying to find why the tack not working, can't find the the sending unit for the tack some place on the back of engine.
I am pretty sure the tack doesn't work off the alternator and looking at some books I have of Yanmar engines says it uses a sending unit off the back of engine but can't locate it yet so back to the boat today in search of it.
Has any one seen this sending unit on the newer 3YMG30 engines,I'll try tracing the wires off the tack and have taken the tack apart and everything looks good at the tack.

Nick, I am pretty sure that one is new enough to be using the alternator signal to drive the Tacho.. Good luck finding the loose/bad connectiion

Pretty sure your boat uses the alternator to drive the tachometer. You do have the ignition key turned on? The diesel will run with the key off but the tachometer will not work. It usually will set on some position other than zero.

If you have a Balmar alternator, it might be easier to look for a single white wire at the back of the alternator, coming off of the Stator, pole which would confirm whether or not the alternator is driving the TACH. If the tack is being driven off of the engine, the pickup is often near the fllywheel casing as that is where the pickup senses the engine RPM.

Also if you have a VDO style tachometer you can go to the VDO website and download the wiring info for the TACH.

Good Luck

OK found out the tack does work off alternator but the connection iis very good for sure so is the wiring on the tack is good also and now will have to check all the wiring at the tack for power.

If the tack won't work, then try gybing instead. It takes longer, but you'll get there eventually.
