I have not had a chance to check out why the Tack is not working, have not used the boat since past july and so just recently put the boat in the water and the tack was not working.
Is the tack hooked up to the alternator on my H-36.

Oh thought you were talking about the the tack ring on your furler. What the heck is the tack hooked up to the alternator?

Oh you mean the tachometer. I think it has a pickup sensor by the flywheel and not connected to the alternator.

If your house bank is full or the shorepower is connected, and your tach works off your alternator, then the regulator may not be asking the alternator to charge.

If your 36 is like the 356 that i use to own or my current 44 the tach is driven off of the alternator, however as I recall the wiring harness from the alternator is wired to the external regulator where the wire to the tach connects at. I don't recall the wire color at the regulator but will check. As an FYI when my alternator failed a year ago the first sign was that the tach stopped working followed shortly by low voltage alarm etc. Hope this is not what you are experiencing

The wire from the alternator stator to the external regulator is a white wire. You should be able to track it down from the back of the alternator to the regulator. On th ARS 5 regulator the stator in is terminal 7 and out to the tach is terminal 8. If you have a different regulator check the Balmar web site

Sorry for the third post but just remembered once in awhile the tack would stick and I had to increase the RPM > ~ 1500 RPMs for a minute or two to get it to kick in.

One time my tach quit on me and I talked to an electronics tech about it. He suggested I turn the calibration screw on the back of the tach one way and back the other way, being careful to put it back where it was. Seems that oxidation can build up on the potentiometer contacts, and moving them wipes the gunk off. Worked for me.

If you are talking about the tack on a yanmar 2gm18 then the tack is a pulse sensor mounted on the bell housing port side of boat (engine) 2 wires comming off a sensor with staycon connectors(spade) like whats on the back of a speaker I access mine thru the access panel in head just clean connections and start motor then move around till tack comes on
