If my tachometer reads 1000 rpm with the engine off, does that mean that it is miscalibrated? Shouldn't it read 0 (zero) and idle around 1,000 rpm with engine on? Have a Hunter 320 2GM20F 18hp Yanmar Diesel. Thanks in advance.

Perpetual motion? Something for nothing?

Seriously, I'm not familiar with this engine, but often engine gauges retain their last reading when power is shut off. Does it drop to zero when you initiate a start? Just my best guess.....

Tach mystery

You may only have a zero offset problem - Call Yanmar and see if you can adjust the zero offset of the tach. There may be an adjustment screw or you may be able to rotate the whole internal movement so the tach rotates back to zero. Maybe the tach was damaged - the needle was bent so it cant go back to zero.

Your tach if fine!!

The tach will read about 1000 rpm when off and will go to zero when you turn the ignition key on and before you start the engine. Mine is like that also.

Tach fine

I'll agree with Lee. Same engine, same result; tach sits at 1000 when off, but when running seems accurate. I've learned to dismiss the off reading. Paul
