My 2gm20F Has a pickup towards the rear of the engine (Flywheel) area on the port side . Its been a while but I think it has a connecter with two contacts. My contacts needed cleaning and never had another problem.

The 2QM20/3QM30 manual shows a sender unit over the flywheel. It screws into the bellhousing. My 2QM20 has the feature but I can honestly say I have never looked for the sender. As much as I am around there fiddling with the oil and tranny oil you would think I would have noticed it. But its only been seven years.

Yanmar Tach very expensive
I looked into putting the Yanmar tack on my 3QM30 some years ago. I can't recall what it cost, but it seems like it was in the neighborhood of $300+. I ended up buying an electronic tach for about $50. The only difference from the user's standpoint is that if you use most any of the 3 stage regulators it will not begin to read anything until the charging kicks in from the regulator. This is usually from 30 seconds to a minute, depending on the regulator and settings. It picks up the pulses from the regulator as it charges.

Not having a clue as to where you're located here's the number for their Union, NJ distro center: 908-964-0700. Tell them which engine you've got and they'll be happy to tell you where the pick-up is and how to trouble shoot the problem. Two years ago I called them for help in adding an after-market H.O. alternator and they were extremely helpful.
