Can anyone tell me why my Universal tachometer still shows 500 rpms after I have shut the motor off? I checked the archives but no luck. I miss the old archives, it was easier to search.

Ross nm means what?

I am sorry I don't understand what nm means. How do you unstick a needle whothout messing up the calibration?

Electric Tachs

It happens on my m-25XP when I shut the key off before the engine has stopped rotating. If you go back and tun the key back on for a second, it should return to zero. Fair winds Dave

No Message

It was a simple question, is the tach needle stuck? Start the engine see if it seems to read about right. Shut down the engine with the power on for the instrument panel. Does it still read 500 RPM? if yes, stuck needle. If no, then No problem.

It's electrical, so...

check the connections at BOTH the alternator AND the panel instrument.

nm = No Message

When someone puts "nm" in a message it means that there really is no message - supposedly their subject line says it all. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Mine does it too

When I turn the key off, then back on, it goes to 0. Don't worry about it.

No big deal

Sometimes mine stops at 500, sometimes 200. The important thing is that it reads accurately when fire up. Nothing else matters.

Teleflex data sheet

A while back I came across a Teleflex data sheet that said if when you turn the ignition on without the engine rotating the tach should read within 50 rpm's of zero. I also always tap needle instrument before reading it because of friction. If not the tach needed to be replaced. It did not seem to matter what it reads with power off. That has been true with my tach, readings confirmed with optical tach. The link below is the only Teleflex data sheet I could find now. Good Winds, Dave M s/v DAMWEGAS

Tach Trauma

Trauma, if this your only worry, well then, you are having a 'charmed' sailors life. This is the kind of detail that is not of the 'worry' garden variety. 1) I just brought a small yacht up the coast that did not HAVE a tachometer, a Volvo saildrive, some smaller engines do not have them. All of these diesel engines are governed, and we run at 80 percent for two reasons, a) for a good 'fuel curve' e.g. not to waste fuel. b) To keep the temp down. You can get a feel for the RPM of any engine, and I will wake up immediately if they fall off, as it could be a fould prop, dirty fuel or worse. Worry about Iran getting Nucs a tach on a sailboat that doesn't even need to sync twins is not worth the bother...;-)
