Tachometer not working

The other day, when I started my Yanmar engine, the tachometer died just after starting it. It simply went up to 2000 rm and then dropped back to zero. I shut down and then restart and the same thing happened. I checked the electrical connections and they seem to be ok. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what is the solution. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Which end?

Doug: You checked the connections. Did you check both ends (motor and tach side). What about the power source?

sending unit

I had my tach sending unit die last season in a very similiar way. Follow the cable down to the motor and unscrew the unit. Take an Ohm meter and measure the resistance across the unit. If it is shorted or open you need a new one. Call Mack Boring. Its pricey, so be certain its dead.

Check the ignition switch, too

Also check the position of the key in the switch. If it has inadvertantly turned to off, or if the switch is "loose", the tach will shut off.
