Hi All,

I own a 1984 Catalina C27 with a Universal M18 Deisel motor. I'm having a problem with my Tachometer not working. Everything else works fine on the control panel, but the tach doesn't budge at all.

Does anyone know how to check the wiring for the tach?
Where do the wires hook-up on the motor?
Is there a way to jump the wires to test the tach itself?

I would be greatful for any help.

Thanks,
Bill

Pull the panel off and look behind for the color. On mine it was dark brown and it attaches to the alternator's AC Tap/Tach post.

The tach works off the alternator

Look at the engine wiring harness diagrams, here:http://www.c34.org/projects/images/harness/harness1.gif and figure it all out by tracing the wires.

If your battery bank is full, sometimes the alternator will not be required to charge, so the internal regulator will not work the tach. Turn some power on and see what happens.

Check the wiring at the alternator.

Last thing, check the tach to see if it is working. Teleflex is most likely your gauge manufacturer, go to their website, via here: http://www.c34.org/manuals/index.htm, scroll down, and learn how to troubleshoot the gauge.

SailorBill...

in addition to the other comments, check for any slide on connectors in the tach wiring. Pull them apart--if they come apart easily, they're too loose. Clean them with alcohol then squeeze the female side down so that they go back together with some effort. Same goes for the connection at the pick-up point and on the panel.
