tach to alternator

My tach on my 83 Catalina is not working and there is a wire that goes to the alternator that is not connected. What terminal on the alternator does it connect to? I don't want to guess and damage the alternator.

I was lucky, when I looked at the connections on my alternator, one said "tach."

What alternator do you have?

John, I am assuming you have the standard Motorola alternator on a Universal engine, yes? The tach should go to the small output labeled AC TAP. I just replaced my alternator and got an external regulator with its own alternator lead. Hope this helps, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
