I need to replace my Yanmar tach sensor (1984) into the transmission. Previous one does not have any identification to what wires go where. Two leeds to the sensor... unmarked. I assume it makes no difference as, I am just completing a circuit... or am I missing something?

Rich, I think

The sensor just counts teeth if it's like mine. First guess would be that it doesn't matter either way. Second guess is if it doesn't work, just switch the wires. And remember, I can't possibly be wrong, because I am just guessing anyway.

I checked the manual

I looked at the manual, and it shows for the GM series of engines color coded wires to the sensor. Orange and a blue/red. So maybe it does make a difference, but switching should make an error easy to fix.

If you hook it up backwards

it will read -rpm, violating the space-time continuim *yks but seriously, here's a diagram. check chapter 5. Tim

Tim... NiceNEasy...

Tim... I have the book... it is for mechanics (not me). I am not about the time-continuim... that would be RichW. However I did enjoy "Back to the Future". NiceNEasy... You are correct... it just counts teeth. Wire colors are correct! There is no way on the sensor to tell which goes where. The worst that could happen... the tach would go backwards... and I wouldn't burn any fuel? But would be out $110.

Oops, I meant chapter 10,

page 2, if you look at the diagram it shows a W and a G on the sender and the tach, with a blue wire to the g terminal and an orange wire to the w terminal, but on a 2 wire sensor all it is is a coil of wire around a magnet to pick up the tach signal and it doesn't matter which way it is wired. If hooking it up backwards

If hooking it up backwards makes it burn no fuel, please post up. There are probably others, besides myself, who will be switching some wires.

That is what I figured...

Timo42. I am not a whiz when it comes to electricity. All I know is... that electricity does not care what color the wires are!

The most important thing...

is to keep the smoke inside the wires, that is how electricity works, if you let the smoke out, it stops working. ;D Tim

So when...

the smoke starts to leak out of the wires... the most prudent thing to do would be to apply some of that shrink tubing in the effected area?

No!!! you have to reintroduce the smoke first.

I think you can use the Lucas kit. ;D

What British stuff have you owned in the past to be familiar with Lucas, the inventor of darkness??

Was just curious

Not too many around familiar with the older Lucas electrics. Many, many years ago I was the service mgr. in a Triumph dealership. Before they went to the unit construction motors there were two givens with the Triumph. They WOULD leak oil, and the electrics WOULD quit working. Usually sooner than later. One of the big rules in the dealership, was not to service a new bike, until it was sold, and ready to head out the door. Only way to avoid the oil spots. After they went to the unit construction motors, the oil leaks were a lot better, but not the electrics.

Oh, The Memories :)

I had a mid-60’s Bonneville Triumph. Gears on the right, brake on the left. Damn near killed myself with in the first block after I bought it. Oil leaks? Just wear boots, no problem. Electrical system? Problem. Carburetors? Problem. Kick in the head to ride? Yeah. Chick magnet? Oh yeah! *yks Shine On! Don

I had a 59 Ariel square 4, back in the 60s, FAST, a little seapage, with shifter on right, and brake on left, had some close calls untill I got use to it. Have a 99 Honda Valkryie now, Flat 6, 1520 cc's really fast, and love it.
