Table stanchion on 1975 O'Day 25

I wondered if it is possible to remove the table stanchion that houses the crank mechanism for the centerboard. I noticed that in the 1976 O'Day, there is a lead to the cockpit to pull up the centerboard. Is it possible to make an adaptation to make an arrangement more similar to this? The stanchion seems to be in the way at times.

My understanding is that the crank simply pulls up the centerboard, which is the same as in my '76 O'Day 25 (which doesn't have the crank). However, I'd call Rudy with D&R Marine to be sure.

It is needed

The 75 models of the Oday 25 are set up a little differant than later years. The crank is required because the cable (stainless steel) is attached close to the pivot point on the centerboard, requiring a lot of effort to raise it. Later models have a line, (not ss cable) attached closer to the base of the centerboard, requiring much less effort to raise or lower it. Inside the stanchion post is a fiberglass tube that guides the cable. This tube also keeps the opening to the centerboard above the water line, thus keeping water out of the boat. I have thought about trying to set mine up like later models, but have decided that it is not worth the effort, I don't do much inside except sleep and eat if the weather is bad. Tom

Though similar to the next generation, that table post was like the post in my 23 Paceship. I think you need to keep it. The 76 and newer 25's have the centerboard pennant attached to the lowest trailing edge of the centerboard. I would guess that the 75 is attached mid way down the centerboard. This would require that you keep the post. However, if you are willing to do a fairly major rehab, you could remove the post, cut off the existing tube and fiberglass it back closed. Attach a new tube like the 76 and newer 25's and glass that in. Then reattach the pennant lower on the center board. My advice would be to leave it like it is and just sail the boat. When you are ready, buy another boat. Sounds harsh but there are probably other projects on your boat that would take less effort and be more beneficial. r.w.landau "79" O'Day 25 "Continuance"
